This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Partnership.

We present a challenge for partners in committed relationships who are fans of scary movies: Settle in with your significant other and stream Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a intense meditation about the ways we decide to love each other.

An Introductory Film Exploring Partnership Complexities

Together is the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It stars actors Alison Brie and Dave Franco as Tim and Millie, partners that have remained a couple for over ten years. United in marriage in actuality in 2017, the actors bring a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the strengths and weaknesses of a committed partnership.

The story begins when the couple transition from the big city to the countryside for professional reasons. A familiar plot device, admittedly, but that’s primarily where the conventions end. Together becomes as much a examination of mental states of the pair’s relationship as it is a movie featuring biological frights.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an subterranean cavern. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence starts to affect the couple. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond emotional intimacy.

The entire film is a methodically building of scares, blending bits of fever-dream horrors, gross (but tastefully done) biological grotesqueries, and genuinely funny interactions (sometimes amidst something disturbing). The director orchestrates these parts seamlessly and presents them in a gradually swelling atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A great deal of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Her self-assurance and sense of connection is suffering due to a emotional and physical gap. Her unspoken irritation of Tim for his reluctance to pursue anything but his struggling artistic pursuits gradually emerges.

Tim, on the other hand feels trapped and cut off by Millie, who’s the impetus they’ve moved to the country and removed from his social circle. He is terrified of the concept of totally forfeiting his personal autonomy in his partner. This fear is intensified by the fact he lacks a driver's license and is dependent on Millie for mobility.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the kind of problems that come with most partnerships a decade in. Deep down, they continue to care for each other. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and are vulnerable at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable current of uncertainty about their relationship.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together represent these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory avoids being overly obvious or self-important. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the interpersonal storytelling. Both the horror and the drama work together in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has sparked debate on the movie's final takeaway about unhealthy partnerships. It has been said that those not in relationships have seen the movie as a compelling reason for remaining unattached. Conversely, certain partners who were in conflict found that the film ended up guiding them to make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own response could function as a revealing measure of how you think about commitment. Will the finale inspire feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a positive outlook on love? Will you recognize your own traits in one of the characters and yell at the screen, or simply look at your other half and utter, “We could get through that together”?

Whatever the case may be, Together is an exploration you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu at present.
