Patients Stopping Slimming Injections Gain Back Weight Far More Rapidly Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

Fresh analysis suggests that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on lost weight far faster than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Published data in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their body weight while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"Users using these medications should be aware of the danger of fast weight regain when the therapy is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass within about one and a half years.

Analyzing Approaches

The analysis, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.

The team note that individuals who shed pounds through diet and exercise generally experience a less rapid weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.

Understanding the Quick Rebound

Nutrition scientists believe the mechanism of the jabs accounts for the amplified rebound.

GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than normal could lead to the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could diminish responsiveness to its effects," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."

An Ongoing Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.

A number of clinicians argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the treatment should be considered life-long.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication report a powerful return of cravings.

"It was like a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not adopted sustainable lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Survey data show that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with interest being substantial.

  • Use is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits hinges on ongoing behavioural changes.
