Weather balloons transporting a large quantity of cigarettes have disrupted flights in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was compelled to shut down for an extended period when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Aviation Problems
The airport closure led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with authorities cautioning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Officials confirmed that multiple atmospheric balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend drifted across the metropolitan zone, which is home to Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
A minimum of 11 balloons containing 18,000 packs of contraband smoking materials have now been retrieved, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Balloons with contraband - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are nothing new in the Baltic region and Poland."
To date in the current year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were noted during the prior year.
Cross-Border Effects
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which smuggled items were delivered from its adjacent country employing the balloons.
Illegal Transport Methods
In response to questions about why smugglers utilize a technique that proves highly susceptible to weather elements rather than easier to manage drones, officials clarified that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for transporting cigarettes from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and perpetrators so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
Regional Security Context
Such border infiltrations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the continent.
Recent incidents in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about enhancing aerial security throughout European airspace.
