European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.

European Leaders Condemn US Action as ‘Coercion’

European leaders including the French president charged Washington of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded organised efforts to pressure US companies to punish US perspectives they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism Across Europe

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives supported the French president in criticizing the move.

The restrictions were imposed on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

The DSA is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control hate speech and disinformation.

This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
